Safe Routes to School: Our Programs

Safe Routes to School is a national initiative to return kids to the once common act of biking or walking to school. Schools through Colorado are enthusiastic about this program because it:

-Gets kids excited about going to school

-Helps kids arrive alert, refreshed, and ready for school

-Reduces traffic congestion near schools and  keeps kids safe

-Fights childhood obesity and improves their  health

Safe Routes to School: Reaching Children Across Colorado

Serving schools and communities from Denver to Durango and throughout Colorado, Bicycle Colorado's Safe Routesto School program is off to a strong start for the new school year. Maggie Thompson and Dave Cowan, Bicycle Colorado program staff, are managing several projects funded by federal grants through the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), along with a handful of local projects.

Denver Public Schools

Bicycle Colorado and Denver Health are working together to bring the Safe Routes program to Denver Public Schools. Denver Health staff presents health and injury-prevention, coordinating with Bicycle Colorado’s bike safety and skills education. After teaching the students these integral skills and providing them with helmets, the Bicycle Colorado/Denver Health Team works with the schools and communities to further support their students through encouragement programs that  get the kids excited about biking and walking to school.

North Evergreen Schools

The community of Evergreen has been working hard to improve their trail system and educate their students and neighbors about biking and walking to school. Bicycle Colorado has worked closely with NEAT (North Evergreen Activity Trails), the PTA, and the participating schools to not only help students become proficient at bicycling and walking safely but also to work with the local law enforcement and Jefferson County to find solutions to the sometimes frustrating traffic problems that plague residents of the area. These schools recently pulled together for Walkin' and Wheelin' Week to raise awareness on their roads and to energize their students before arriving in the classroom.

City of Fort Collins

Fort Collins, already a bicycle-friendly community, continues to make strides toward improving riding and safety conditions for children and adults. Bicycle Colorado is working with the city to teach the Safe Routes curriculum within the school system. Parents and faculty have the opportunity to survey and evaluate current infrastructure and safety conditions, making changes that will positively affect the whole community. The Bicycle Colorado program staff look forward to spring 2008 when they will kick-off the encouragement programs in Fort Collins!

Teacher Trainings

One of the goals of the State’s Safe Routes program is to reach children statewide with bicycle and pedestrian safety education.Ms. Thompson and Mr.Cowan are traveling around the state bringing Safe Routes to Durango, Buena Vista, Yuma, La Junta, Steamboat Springs, and their surrounding areas. These trainings give smaller communities the tools and information to implement their own Safe Routes programs. Teachers leave the training with classroom toolkits, including complete lesson plans and worksheets.

The city of Aurora also has contracted with Bicycle Colorado for the 2007-08 school year to train their physical education teachers in Safe Routes to School curriculum and teaching strategies. All of these trainings are accredited through Adams State College, providing participating teachers with continuing education credits required by the state.

The final training in this series will be offered during the pre-COAHPERD conference this October. Contact COAHPERD now to register for the Safe Routes to School Teacher training.

With the help of our broad coalition of state and national supporters, Safe Routes to School is now funded with $8.9 million of federal funds over five years. This program funds improvements to bicycle/pedestrian environments near schools and education efforts to teach students, parents, and teachers safe bicycling and walking practices.
